Plant identification included both native and weed species - (Common Century, introduced as a herb, opposite) In this high quality stand we found scattered examples of about 9 weeds. Many are bird spread, often from the garden of the beachside holiday home where the plants needed to be tough to survive between annual visits from absentee owners.
The first task in vegetation mapping was to notice indicators of boundaries. We looked for changes in slope, soil, plants, light and aspect.
Where the tussocks (the large tufted graminoids) started we found.....
The soil had changed.
When we arrived at the next border, near the bottom of the steep slope, we found
The deep shade changed conditions again.

into the rainforest (where primates fear to go - there be predators in there!)
