PICTURE the scene. Exhausted from the fast pace of
city life, you head to Nicholson for a relaxing weekend in the country.
Ah, the country air, the peace and quiet, the open spaces....
But your hosts have a plan and
it doesn’t involve much R&R. Sue Peirce and Michael Oxer, of the
Friends of East Gippsland Rail Trail, have roped in many a city visitor
to their passion: looking after the beautiful patches of bush that lie
alongside the cycle path. The Friends group has recently joined the CMN,
bringing two critically endangered vegetation types into the CMN family.
Gippsland Plains Grassy Woodland (see pages 8 and 9) and Littoral
Rainforest (pages 6 and 7) are both found along stretches of the trail.
The Friends group has already restored some very degraded riverbanks
along the Nicholson to help return Warm Temperate and Littoral
Rainforests to the
area.
At Bumberrah the Friends are weeding the Red Gum woodlands and the
tiny grassland remnant where the station once stood.

The two rail trails that run through Gippsland (Gippsland Plains and
East Gippsland) cover 164 km of country. Linear remnants present their
own special management challenges. The CMN is talking to both groups
about how we can help them manage the native vegetation along its
length.
We’ll tell you when it’s safe to
visit.....
